WWE’s weekly web series WWE Speed has not aired on X since July 9, raising questions about its future.
The most recent episode ended with Sol Ruca defeating Alba Fyre to retain the WWE Women’s Speed Championship. As the show closed, commentator Corey Graves said, “See you next week on Speed.”
Three weeks later, no new episodes have aired. Neither WWE nor X — including WWE Chief Content Officer Paul Levesque, who often promotes Speed matches on his X account, has issued an update or statement on the show’s
status.
In 2024, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that WWE and X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, had signed a two-year deal for the series. Speed was billed as an exclusive weekly show featuring timed matches of up to five minutes. The bouts were recorded either before Raw or SmackDown and featured talent from across WWE’s three brands, including NXT, and aired on Wednesdays at noon Eastern.
WWE Speed debuted in April 2024, beginning with a men’s tournament to crown the inaugural Speed Champion, which was won by Ricochet. The show regularly featured tournaments consisting of matches with a three-minute time limit. The winner of each tournament was then rewarded with a title shot against the Speed Champion, where the time limit was raised to five minutes.
Because of the short time limit, matches were often a sprint, with wrestlers charging at each other at the opening bell. With little time to waste, matches frequently came down to who could avoid making a critical mistake in a rush for victory.
Last August, WWE announced that it was adding a women’s division, with a tournament to crown a women’s champion beginning that September. Candice LeRae won the inaugural women’s tournament in October to take home the gold. She held the title until this past April, when she was defeated by Ruca, who then went on to win the NXT Women’s North American title days later.
Since introducing the women’s division, Speed has alternated between men’s and women’s tournaments. Fans were expecting a men’s tournament to begin, with the winner facing the current Speed Champion, El Grande Americano. Concerns about Americano’s status as champion grew after Chad Gable, who was portraying the faux luchador, was sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Ludwig Kaiser has since donned the mask, continuing the tradition Gable started. It’s unknown if Gable’s injury and the transition to Kaiser may have delayed the start of a new tournament.
Notably, the respective Men’s and Women’s titles appear to remain in active status on WWE’s website. That may suggest that WWE hasn’t at least abandoned the concept altogether. On X, the show appeared to draw strong numbers, with the last episode totaling around one million views.
With SummerSlam taking place this weekend, it’s unknown whether Levesque will address the show’s future during one of two expected post-show press conferences.
