What's Happening?
Scottish aerospace company Skyrora has received a launch licence from the UK Civil Aviation Authority, allowing it to conduct launch operations from the SaxaVord spaceport in the Shetland Islands. This licence permits Skyrora to carry out up to 16 launches per year with its sub-orbital Skylark L vehicle. SaxaVord, which became the first UK spaceport to receive a vertical-launch permit in 2023, can host up to 30 launches annually. The approval process considered various factors, including safety and environmental mitigation, and requires conditions such as insurance and airspace agreements to be met before scheduling launches. Skyrora is also developing the larger Skylark XL vehicle.
