Rumour Mongering: PSG Enter Rodrygo Race

WHAT'S THE STORY?

According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Paris Saint-Germain have thrown their hat into the possible transfer of Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.

Liverpool FC, have of course been linked with the player, but are keeping their cards close to the chest, denying the rumour to The Athletic’s James Pearce while Bayern Munich

mull a possible offer for Luis Diaz.

While I’m already not fully convinced Rodrygo is the guy Liverpool’s recruitment team will go for if Diaz leaves, it seems even more implausible at the moment for PSG to go for Rodrygo.

They already have Kvaratskhelia, Doué, and Barcola ahead of him. The presence of Kavara ahead of Barcola already led to some chatter about Barcola’s possible availability on the market earlier this summer, which was quickly shut down by PSG.

What I’m theorising is that lots of dominoes would have to fall for PSG to open up space for Rodrygo, which doesn’t really make much sense when Kvara, Doué and Barcola all look like superior options.

The whole argument for a Rodrygo move to Liverpool is that the player has spent most of his time playing on the right because of Vinicius Jr, but would prefer to play on the left, where he has flourished on occasion when Vini hasn’t been available. Rodrygo would presumably start with Gakpo as his deputy, while providing some cover for Salah on the right. You’re hoping for an uptick in performance on a rather small sample size, while paying what would be a massive fee, which makes me rather uncomfortable with that idea.

That really doesn’t apply to PSG when Kvara and Barcola are already there. Even if they sell one of them, likely to be Barcola, he would still have to compete with Kvara for the starting left position. And if PSG start shopping Barcola, why wouldn’t Liverpool register interest in that player instead?

The whole thing doesn’t really make sense on any level at the moment. But anyhow, carry on.
