Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy began a minor league rehab assignment, playing six innings at third base and going hitless in three at-bats at the plate for Triple-A Oklahoma City against the Salt Lake Bees, an Angels affiliate.
Muncy flew out to center field in the first inning, then struck out swinging in his final two at-bats in his first game action in 27 days.
Tuesday is a day shy of four weeks since Muncy suffered a bone bruise in his left knee on a slide into third base by Michael A. Taylor
of the White Sox on July 2. At the time of the injury the tone was somber at Dodger Stadium, but MRI results the next day showed no structural damage. Muncy estimated at the time he might miss six weeks or so, but depending on how this week goes he might return to Los Angeles within five weeks.
In Muncy’s absence, Tommy Edman has started at the hot corner 11 times, Miguel Rojas nine times, and Kiké Hernández once before he also landed on the injured list.
Manager Dave Roberts said Alex Freeland, who was called up to the majors for the first time on Tuesday, will start at third base on Wednesday in Cincinnati against the Reds, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. The shortstop Freeland started 26 times at third base in Triple-A this season.
