ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers are extending President Koby Altman through the 2029-30 NBA season. Altman has been in the team’s front office since 2017.

Altman has bridged
the gap from the post-LeBron Cavs to a new version of the team that has found success without The King for the first time in decades. Rebuilding from the ashes took time. But Altman found talent wherever he could — eventually forming a team that won 64 games last season.
Notable moves from Altman include drafting Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, trading for Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen, and hiring Kenny Atkinson, who is now the reigning Coach of the Year winner.
Altman has been busy this summer. He traded Isaac Okoro, who he selected fifth overall in the 2020 NBA Draft, for Lonzo Ball — who could fill a much-needed role on the bench. Altman also brought Larry Nance Jr. back to Cleveland and drafted two more players in Tyrese Proctor and Saliou Niang.
Cleveland has a record of 317-312 in Altman’s tenure. There are some rocky years in between LeBron’s final season and their recent resurgence. But the Cavs have won 50+ games in two of the last three seasons and hold one of the brightest futures in basketball. They are expected to be legit contenders in the East next season. Something that hasn’t been said for a non-LBJ team since I’ve been alive.
His resume isn’t flawless. Cavs fans can point towards holes in the roster or express angst over the team’s recent failures in the postseason. But one thing’s for sure — Altman believes in the roster he built — and Dan Gilbert clearly believes in it, too.
