Story of the day
It’s all about the O-line.
The Patriots’ interior offensive line saw a change-up on Tuesday, with rookie Jared Wilson becoming the first left guard up in 1-on-1s and in full-team work. That presented a move away from the established procedure, which saw former first-round draft pick Cole Strange fill that role throughout the offseason and early in training camp.
The left guard position is not the only one worth keeping a close eye on on Wednesday, however. Center Garrett Bradbury was also in the spotlight Tuesday after getting rolled up on late; he appeared to have avoided serious injury but was nonetheless replaced by Jared Wilson toward the tail-end of practice.
At tackle, right-side starter Morgan Moses was limited on Tuesday with depth option Yasir Durant getting shaken up. Needless to say, there was some constant movement up front on Tuesday. Will it continue Day 7 of camp, or will some stability return?
Injuries to monitor
PUP: WR Mack Hollins, OT Vederian Lowe
DNP: CB Christian Gonzalez, DT Joshua Farmer, LB Jahlani Tavai, CB Carlton Davis III
Limited: OT Morgan Moses
Injured: OL Yasir Durant, C Garrett Bradbury
Besides the injuries and limitations above, there were plenty of other injury-related news coming out of Foxborough on Tuesday. Christian Gonzalez was unable to participate in practice after hurting his left hamstring the previous practice, even though he was present in a shirt and shorts and seemingly in good spirits. The belief is that the second-team All-Pro did noot suffer a serious injury.
Likewise, the team saw Austin Hooper return from the physically unable to perform list. In addition, fullback Brock Lampe was placed on injured reserve.
Players to watch
QB Drake Maye: New England’s starting quarterback had an up-and-down day on Tuesday. That is in itself not necessarily a reason for concern, but the team would likely want to see more stability out of its most important player. Let’s see if it will get it on Wednesday.
G Jared Wilson, G Cole Strange and G Caedan Wallace: As noted above, the left guard position saw some change on Tuesday with Wilson being the first man up in 1-on-1s and team drills for a change. Was that a sign of things to come, or just a temporary change to give the promising rookie more prominent opportunities? We will see on Wednesday — something that is also true for former offensive tackle Caedan Wallace’s involvement at LG.
C Garrett Bradbury: Bradbury did not seem to suffer any major injury yesterday. However, him being limited in any way might open the door for another center — presumably Jared Wilson, who also was moved in and out of the lineup at center previously — to take away valuable practice time. Bradbury also fumbled an exchange with Drake Maye on Tuesday, and lost both of his 1-on-1 matchups, so he needs a bounceback in more ways than one.
CB D.J. James: With the statuses of Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis uncertain heading into Wednesday, the Patriots’ depth cornerbacks will once again get a golden opportunity to prove themselves. Among the most active so far has been second-year man D.J. James, who was integrated into the starting mix Tuesday and seems to position himself well with joint practices and the start of preseason on the horizon.
