Roy Jones Jr spent some time talking to Fight Hub TV about the most recent big fight between Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez, with Shakur clearly besting Teofimo over the distance. Jones says Shakur put
on a great performance and says he’ll have a lot of options after this winning, even comparing him to a Floyd Mayweather of this generation with the exception being he thinks Shakur is actually willing to take tougher fights.
On Shakur’s performance over Teofimo
“Shakur did a great job. Shakur fought a beautiful fight, outstanding fight, and that’s all you can ask for. You couldn’t ask for a much better fight than that.”
On rumors of Teofimo being alone in his locker room after the fight
“Not good, man. You hate to see something happen to somebody like that but that’s why in the pre-fight things you have to be really careful what you say, how you do things because you can run everybody away from you and at the end of the day it gets very lonely by yourself.
“So you have to be careful how far you go even in trying to promote a fight because at the end of the day, we all have love and respect for each other but when you do things like he did, go beyond that respect factor. Now at the end of the day if you lose nobody really cares about you because you went so deep with it in trying to promote the fight.”
On Shakur being compared to this generation’s Mayweather
“He is, because he ain’t taking many chances, ain’t giving guys no chance to beat him. But now the difference with him is he probably fighting everybody, he not ducking and dodging. He’s fighting everybody so that’s a little bit different. So he could be Floyd Mayweather in Floyd not getting beat in this era but he a little different from Floyd in that he’s willing to take on a big shot. But he also getting the right money for it early in his career.”
On where Shakur could go from here
“He got Gervonta Davis still in the blind, Devin Haney still in the blind, he got a lot of places he can go from there. I mean, in boxing it’s always open if you’re willing to move and negotiate and do things, boxing is always open.”
On Shakur getting swiftly stripped by WBC
“I don’t really want to get too deep into that, all I’m going to say is it’s wrong for him to be stripped if he didn’t even defend the title.”
