The Chinese Basketball Association announced Thursday that Portland Trail Blazers rookie center Yang Hansen won’t participate in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup with the Chinese national team from Aug. 5-17, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
Yang requested to skip the international tournament so he could remain in Portland for optional workouts organized by the Trail Blazers, the CBA said in a statement.
“He applied to the national team and the Chinese Basketball Association, hoping to participate in two
ADshort-term training camps organized by the Portland Trail Blazers starting on Aug. 11 in order to better integrate with his new team and further improve his skills. These camps are designed for rookies and players who need continued development based on their Summer League performance.”
The CBA agreed to the request, saying it was in the best interest for the long-term development of Yang and the national team.
Xinhua reported that Yang showed his gratitude for the support in a social media post (the text was translated to English by Xinhua):
“My journey in the NBA Summer League has come to an end. I’ve learned a lot and also recognized my shortcomings. Every game, every confrontation has been a valuable experience for me.”
“Due to a scheduling conflict with the preseason training camp, I will not be able to join the national team for the upcoming Asia Cup. I especially want to thank the Chinese Basketball Association and the national team for their understanding and support.”
“From the moment I decided to chase my dream in the United States, I have always felt the strength of the entire Chinese basketball community behind me.”
“The opportunity to focus on adapting to the NBA’s rhythm and improving my personal abilities is inseparable from the open-minded attitude everyone has shown. This kind of tolerance for the growth of a young player has truly touched me.”
“In the coming period, I will devote all my energy to preparing for the preseason training camp and strive to make solid progress in the new season. During the Asia Cup, I will be following every game of the national team and cheering for my brothers.”
