WWE SUMMERSLAM PREDICTIONS
World Heavyweight Championship: GUNTHER (c) vs. CM Punk
Geno Mrosko: I don’t know what the hell the deal is with Seth Rollins but I can’t see booking this just to beat Punk. That wouldn’t make any damn sense to me. Pick: CM Punk.
Sean Rueter: Regardless of when Seth Rollins comes back -- and I'd guess that doesn't happen this weekend, but does way before WrestleMania 42 -- it's way more interesting if Punk has the belt. And I'm really interested in seeing if they can book Gunther away from the title scene for a while. Pick: CM Punk
Kyle Decker: I don’t see Punk losing clean. I’m pretty much in the “Seth isn’t as hurt as they want us to think” camp, and I fully expect him to cash in on Punk after Punk beats Gunther. Pick: CM Punk
Claire Elizabeth: CM Punk is still the Best in the World and GUNTHER is reduced to “we’re not so different, you and I” monologues, so you KNOW he’s scared. Pick: CM Punk
Cain A. Knight: They should probably strike while the iron is hot and put the belt on Punk before he gets injured again, even if it’s just for a couple minutes so that Seth Rollins can cash in the Money in the Bank contract on him. Pick: CM Punk
Marcus Benjamin: There’s only but so long Punk can say this championship is his goal without him actually accomplishing said goal. Giving him the belt opens up a lot of possibilities on Raw, and frees up GUNTHER to do some more things. Truthfully, I’m a bit bored with him as champ if only because the beats feel the same. Pick: CM Punk
Women’s Championship: Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Jade Cargill
Geno Mrosko: I wanna say they crown Cargill here but the build to it has been a huge nothing burger. They haven’t treated this at all like it will be Jade’s big shining moment, instead making this match a bit of an afterthought. So I’m going to go the opposite way. Pick: Tiffany Stratton
Sean Rueter: Time's up on Tiffy's reign. A Storm’s coming. Pick: Jade Cargill
Kyle Decker: Even with a marquee WrestleMania win, I’m still not feeling Tiffy’s title reign. And I don’t think there’s any reason to wait on Jade at this point. She’s never going to give us 5 star matches, but she’s shown she’s solid enough to put the title on while she still has that aura. Pick: Jade Cargill
Claire Elizabeth: Things are a little too cut and dry on this one, like oh of course Jade is unstoppable but Tiffany’s entire title reign has been about surviving impossible odds and holding onto the belt and I’m willing to bet she’s got at least one trick left in the bag that’ll save the day for her here. Pick: Tiffany Stratton
Cain A. Knight: Naomi doesn’t care about screwing over Jade anymore, which means nobody can stop her from winning the gold. Pick: Jade Cargill
Marcus Benjamin: This might be the easiest pick of the night. It’s time for the coronation. Pick: Jade Cargill
Women’s Tag Team Championship: Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez (c) vs. Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss
Geno Mrosko: Every single thing about this has the unlikely alliance winning gold, no matter what it means for The Judgment Day. Pick: Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss
Sean Rueter: In the words of Michael P.S. Hayes, “when somebody catches fire, they just catch fire”. They can figure where they need or want to go with them later, but for now you crown the Allies of Convenience. Especially at the Biggest Party of the Summer. Pick: Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss
Kyle Decker: I was wrong when I picked Alexa & Charlotte at Evolution but I still think they get a short run with the tag championships. Pick: Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair
Claire Elizabeth: I’m gonna go ahead and say it— Alexa and Charlotte are sitting here being cute and saying “no no no we’re not friends oh god no we can’t be friends we’re just you know we’re just helping each other out a little, okay?” and it stinks of “they’re roommates” and “I’m just a really good ally” and “in the dub, they’re cousins!” all of which is to say I could totally see this going either way (especially since Roxanne! added the exclamation point to her name), but no matter what, Alexa and Charlotte should kiss. Pick: Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair
Cain A. Knight: Charlotte Flair has gone way too long (over two years) without holding championship gold in WWE. Pick: Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair
Marcus Benjamin: I’m torn. On one hand, I’m sure the territory wants to reward Charlotte & Alexa for their chemistry and making this thing work. It’s also a great story for Charlotte. On the other, Raquel & Roxanne are just tapping into what their championship reign might mean, along with the ramifications for Judgment Day. Pick: Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss
Roman Reigns & Jey Uso vs. Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed
Geno Mrosko: They see a big future in Bron Breakker, and also in Bronson Reed, but that does not mean they get to win a match against Roman Reigns, even if Jey is there to take a pin for him. Pick: Roman Reigns & Jey Uso
Sean Rueter: I just can’t see anyone other than Big Bronson taking a pin here, regardless of what kind of Bloodline-like shenanigans ensue before or after the match. Pick: Roman Reigns & Jey Uso
Kyle Decker: There isn’t enough star power on the side opposite the Bloodline to win here, no matter how big they’re trying to make Breakker look. And he’ll get there (and won’t take the pin), but he’s not at that level yet that I think there’s any chance in hell that Roman and his still insanely over cousin lose here. Pick: Roman Reigns & Jey Uso
Claire Elizabeth: Okay I double-checked to make sure I didn’t miss a stipulation this time and the fact that this is a plain jane match and NOT your main event for the evening makes me dead certain that the Bron ‘n Bron Connection are gonna raise hell and they don’t care who gets the winner’s purse as long as Reigns and Uso can’t leave the arena under their own power. Pick: Jey Uso & Roman Reigns
Cain A. Knight: Roman Reigns didn’t return to WWE just to lose against Seth Rollins’ henchmen at SummerSlam. Pick: Roman Reigns & Jey Uso
Marcus Benjamin: I’m basing this pick on Roman making his exit soon to hit the street for some fighting. It’s as simple as that. Pick: Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed
Jelly Roll & Randy Orton vs. Logan Paul & Drew McIntyre
Geno Mrosko: I kinda love that Logan Paul, who shocked everyone by how good he was right away, is now in the roll of shitting on guys coming in off celebrity but being way better than anyone could reasonably expect. Jelly Roll is pretty good at this thing already. Now it’s time to see if he can put a match together, even in a tag team with a legend (killer). He’s almost certainly winning. Pick: Jelly Roll & Randy Orton
Sean Rueter: Jelly Roll is legitimately one of the better babyface rollouts we’ve had in a while. It would be pretty shocking to beat him in his debut match, or end this story with Paul & McIntyre victorious. Pick: Jelly Roll & Randy Orton
Kyle Decker: The celebrities don’t lose these matches. The real question is who better politicked not to be pinned by Mr. Roll. Pick: Jelly Roll & Randy Orton
Claire Elizabeth: Logan Paul deserves to lose for wearing a burlap sack to SmackDown as much as for any other reason. Pick: (sigh) Roll-KO (Jelly Roll & Randy Orton)
Cain A. Knight: There is an RKO here with Logan Paul’s name on it, after Jelly chokeslams him of course. Pick: Jelly Roll & Randy Orton
Marcus Benjamin: I have to pick? Every match? Even this one? And there’s no one I can bribe? Fine. Pick: Randy Orton & Jelly Roll
Sami Zayn vs. Karrion Kross
Geno Mrosko: I think the rumors of Kross leaving WWE are greatly exaggerated and they’re actually going to do something with him off the back of this. Pick: Karrion Kross
Sean Rueter: Zayn’s a guy you know can main event a big show or be a key piece of a ‘Mania program. I like what Kross has been doing lately, but whether he’s signed for another month or three more years, his job is to put guys like Sami over. Pick: Sami Zayn
Kyle Decker: I’ll admit, I’m not nearly as into Kross as a subset of wrestling Twitter, though I generally enjoy his act. But I don’t see what Sami Zayn losing would accomplish here. Maybe they have a long arc of self discovery in mind before they put Sami on a title journey, but I’m not sure I buy that. In the end, I can see one of these two guys winning a world title in the next year and that’s the one who should probably win. Pick: Sami Zayn
Claire Elizabeth: Sami Zayn should be on his way to finally win the big one and Karrion Kross should be filing name change paperwork regardless of where he’s going to be working next month because I canNOT believe they’ve been calling him “Karrion” for five gosh darn years now. Wrestling is dumb. Pick: Sami Zayn
Cain A. Knight: I know that Sami Zayn will still be under contract with WWE one month from now, but I don’t know if that’s also true for Kross. Pick: Sami Zayn
Marcus Benjamin: This is the most interesting story on the card. Sami wants to prove he’s exactly who he says he is while Karrion wants to prove he isn’t. I believe Sami is that guy. There’s also the rumors that this is Karrion’s last dance in WWE. Pick: Sami Zayn
That’s how we see the card playing out.
