Unprecedented.

Despite the historic success of the Texas Longhorns as the fifth-winningest program in college football, including four national championships, the Longhorns have never started the season ranked No. 1 in the preseason Coaches Poll.

Until now.

In securing 28 first-place votes from the 67 panelists this year, Texas will open the 2025 season with the top ranking in the coaches poll for the first time, heightening the drama surrounding the season-opening matchup against the Ohio State Buckeyes

in Columbus.

With 20 first-place votes, the Buckeyes are ranked No. 2, setting up another historic first — a No. 1 versus No. 2 matchup in the coaches poll to open the season.

Eight other SEC teams are ranked in the Top 25 with Georgia at No. 4, Alabama at No. 8, LSU at No. 9, South Carolina at No. 13, Ole Miss at No. 15, Florida at No. 17, Tennessee at No. 18, and Texas A&M at No. 21.

Of those teams, Texas will only face three — the Bulldogs in Athens, the Gators in Gainesville, and the Aggies in Austin.
