After WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque insinuated that John Cena had a “wish list” of opponents for his final year as an in-ring wrestler — and specifically that Brock Lesnar was on it, within a matter of days Cena set the record straight with a catchphrase-worthy soundbite: “They deal ‘em, I play ‘em”.
Cena’s reiterated that several times over the past week. He did so again on The Tonight Show last night (Aug. 13) when Jimmy Fallon asked the Peacemaker star (who, as you can see
in the video embedded above, showed up in his get-up from the HBO Max/DC Studios hit to promote the upcoming second season) if he had anyone in mind as his final opponent:
“No, no. I’ve never operated like that. I’ve just always kind of been reliable, showing up, and doing whatever I’m asked. And I really want this tour to be, not only special — it’ll always be special for me because you guys [the fans] are out there — I want it to be special for the business. My goal has always been to leave WWE better than I found it. So whoever they deem appropriate to get that energy, man, I’m cool with that.”
That fits with everything else in the history of John Cena’s relationship with WWE. But we’ve seen where putting all his faith in the company’s vision has gotten Cena so far this year… maybe it’s time he use some his influence backstage? He told Fallon he has 11 appearances left before hanging up the jorts.
Let us know what you think — or who you think Cena should face in December (reportedly on a Saturday Night’s Main Event from Boston, possibly on Dec. 27 as counter-programming to AEW)?
