What's Happening?
The International Health Regulations (IHR), a treaty recognized by 196 states, serve as the framework for global health security. The IHR's cornerstone is the declaration of Public Health Emergencies of International Concern (PHEIC), which mobilizes international coordination and funding to address emerging health threats. Since 2007, six events have been declared PHEIC, including the H1N1 influenza pandemic, Ebola outbreaks, and COVID-19. These declarations facilitate timely action to limit public health impacts and prevent unnecessary travel and trade restrictions.
