Newcastle United are preparing for an active summer transfer window after failing to add any new players in January, according to a report by The Athletic’s Chris Waugh.
Waugh reported that the club’s priority
is “improving and refreshing a first XI that has not been significantly reinforced through signings since the summer of 2023,” with changes expected across multiple positions.
The report said full-back, midfield and goalkeeper are viewed as priority areas, although Newcastle are “considering options across the pitch” as they look to move into the next phase of their development.
Waugh reported that a young forward is likely to arrive, with both incomings and outgoings expected in midfield. Newcastle are also seeking at least one young centre back, with the possibility that two could be added.
Replacing one of the club’s current wingers is “not out of the question,” according to the report, as Newcastle assess how to rebalance the squad.
Senior departures are also expected, with Waugh reporting that players such as Kieran Trippier are likely to leave, with Fabian Schar potentially following the legendary wing-back, meaning the leadership group within the squad will need to be reshaped.
The report addressed Newcastle’s financial position heading into the summer.
“Yes,” Waugh wrote, when asked whether the club will have money to spend, pointing to the £125million sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool in September as having a “transformative effect” on finances.
Waugh reported that Newcastle have the capacity to invest in a few different transfers during the offseason, even after spending £241m last summer window.
However, limitations remain, particularly around wages. The report said Newcastle’s “disciplined salary structure” remains well below the so-called Big Six average.
Waugh added that the introduction of Premier League squad cost rules next season should benefit Newcastle, shifting spending controls from loss-based to ratio-based.
