Sven Botman’s pre-season return took a worrying turn after the defender was forced off during Newcastle United’s 3-2 loss to Arsenal in Singapore.
The Dutchman came on at halftime as part of a switch to a three-man defense but was substituted in the 70th minute after gesturing toward his groin.
“He came off and said his groin was a bit tight,” Eddie Howe said. “So fingers crossed he’s OK.”
Botman’s injury history will not ease concerns within NUFC. He has only made 21 Premier League starts over the
last two seasons, largely due to knee issues. While Saturday’s injury is not believed to involve his knee, the timing is problematic.
Newcastle have yet to sign a new center-back, and Botman’s presence was expected to be central to their defensive plans this season.
A source close to the player, speaking anonymously to The Athletic on Sunday, said the substitution was precautionary and the issue isn’t considered serious at this stage.
Botman’s setback came amid a broader reshuffle in Newcastle’s preseason plans. Alexander Isak remains absent amid transfer uncertainty, and Howe’s attacking depth is already stretched thin.
Will Osula and Jacob Murphy featured heavily in the friendly loss, while recent signing Anthony Elanga scored on his full debut.
Newcastle’s next match is against a K League All-Star team in South Korea on August 1.
The club will be hoping Botman is available again by then, with the Premier League opener against Aston Villa just three weeks away.
