Newcastle United have stepped away from negotiations to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa after the west London club refused to lower their sky-high demands, according to multiple outlets, including Sky Sports.
The Magpies saw a £25 million offer rejected earlier in the transfer window and were reportedly willing to increase their bid. However, Brentford’s refusal to name a specific asking price and reluctance to sell following Bryan Mbeumo’s £71 million departure to Manchester United left the deal
at a standstill.
“Wissa wants to join Newcastle and wants to play Champions League football as he feels he may not get another opportunity,” Sky Sports reported.
According to the report, the forward is frustrated and has already taken measures to make that clear. The 28-year-old returned from Brentford’s training camp in Portugal earlier this week to discuss his future with club officials, but not even that seems to be enough to convince the Bees to let him go for a reasonable fee.
Newcastle had Wissa as a secondary option behind RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, contingent on Alexander Isak’s likely exit. Given Brentford’s hardened stance, along with Wissa’s potential threat to skip training, added further complications to the whole situation, and NUFC seems to be reticent to get deeper into negotiations.
With no valuation offered to Newcastle and Brentford hesitant to sanction another sale without securing reinforcements beforehand, Newcastle will likely shift their focus—once again and after their nth failed transfer—elsewhere.
