Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka praises Vincent Kompany, compares his support from the squad to Hansi Flick’s

At 29 and having been at the club for seven years, Leon Goretzka has seen many coaches at Bayern Munich. Though he just missed Jupp Heynckes’ last stint at the club, he has worked under Niko Kovač, Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel and now Vincent Kompany.

Asked to speak about Kompany by German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, Goretzka had only praise for him.

“When you’re successful, the bond with the coach always gets better. My relationship with Vincent Kompany

is excellent, both for me and my teammates. We’re all very happy with him. Vinnie has excellent social skills; he knows the players’ language. And he’s very honest, from day one. That’s very important, especially for experienced players,” Goretzka said. “There are coaches who tell you things that you immediately know aren’t true. Vinnie is honest; that lasts the longest, everyone knows that.”

Thomas Müller has seen more coaches than Goretzka at Bayern, however, including the likes of Josep Guardiola, which makes the 35-year-old Bavarian legend’s recent statement that no coach since Guardiola has clicked so well with Kompany rather significant.

Again captured by @iMiaSanMia, Goretzka was quizzed by Welt am Sonntag about Müller’s statement and largely agreed, though he believes Kompany has some competition for that title: “Thomas must have gotten a call from Hansi Flick after saying that [laughs]… During my time at Bayern, it was comparable under Hansi that the whole team stood behind the coach to this extent.”

Of course, most Bayern fans know the story of how Flick took over from Kovač, instantly improved the mood and immediately went on to win the sextuple. If the support for Kompany is genuinely comparable to the support the current FC Barcelona manager had, that is certainly good news for Bayern and the club’s fans. Let alone the players.
