Kayla McBride Named All-Star Replacement

The Minnesota Lynx got some positive news Tuesday morning, as the WNBA officially announced that guard Kayla McBride was named as an 2025 WNBA All-Star Game replacement for the injured Rhyne Howard.

This was certainly music to Lynx fans ears. Minnesota’s President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach Cheryl Reeve was not shy to speak her mind about the

league-leading Lynx only having two players selected as All-Stars. They held a 17-2 record at the time and were several games ahead of the next few teams in the standings.

The Lynx are currently 19-4 and 3.0 games ahead of the second place Phoenix Mercury.

Reeve was referencing two teams in particular. The Seattle Storm are currently hold a 13-9 record, yet had three players named as All-Stars in Nneke Ogwumike, Skyler Diggins, and Gabby Williams. The “fan favorite” Indiana Fever are 11-10, yet saw Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell get three spots.

Justice, though delayed, is finally served.

This is McBride’s fifth All-Star selection and second straight with the Lynx. Her numbers remain as consistent as ever, posting averages of 14.1 points, 2.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.2 steals on shooting splits of .413/.379/.941. The raw stats might not jump off the screen, she is often tasked with guarding the opposing team’s best perimeter player. Her knack for making clutch plays on both end of the court is something Minnesota has come to expect from the 33-year-old.

It’s also very possible that McBride gets the call for the three-point contest as well. She has participated in it three times already, being the runner up twice, and coming in third place last season. The full list of contestants have not been announced yet, though Sabrina Ionescu, Caitlin Clark, and last season’s winner Allisha Gray have been reportedly confirmed. A star-studded cast.

What might be the most exciting part of all this is that McBride now gets to join Napheesa Collier, Courtney Williams, and Reeve on Team Collier. It has been a historic season for the Lynx and it’s only right that they have four representatives on All-Star Weekend.

The All-Star Game will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday, July 19 at 7:30 pm CT, and aired on ABC.
