Jamaal Charles on the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss: ‘It surprised me’ | NBC Bay Area
Charles believes the next-look unit will surprise people this season, largely because of the coaching staff — which he played for four seasons from 2013 to 2016.
“That’s something they always diagnose in the year before,” he explained, “they’ll go back and see what we did wrong, then try to correct it going into the (next) year.
“With getting (beat) that way from the Super Bowl, a lot of people will think (O-line) is our
ADweakness. It might be surprising this year that we might be on top of that, from the trenches in the line. I think we’ll get that corrected.”
Charles was a standout for the Chiefs from 2008 to 2016, amassing more than 1,000 rushing yards in five different seasons with two First-Team All-Pro selections. He left Kansas City just before Mahomes got to town, but Charles has been present in the area and expects the dynasty to remain on track after the Super Bowl loss.
“I think they’re going to respond back (well),” Charles said. “They have some things they need to fix. Our (offensive) linemen weren’t that good last year, so I think we have a lot of stuff we had to get fixed. ... So, once we fix those things, I think we have a chance to basically get the ball to our playmakers, get the ball to the outside.

Kansas City Chiefs: TE Jake Briningstool
Even with Travis Kelce on the roster, the Kansas City Chiefs can’t resist adding a talented tight end.
Beyond Kelce, they already have Noah Gray, Jared Wiley and Robert Tonyan as part of the tight end room. For some teams, those latter three might be their top options. Even so, Kansas City still signed Jake Briningstool, who was easily one of the top available undrafted free agents.
He is a natural receiver. He even got some run with the Chiefs’ first team during minicamp. He’ll need to improve his play-strength and become a better interior blocker.
At the same time, the Chiefs are at a point where Kelce turns 36 later this year. They can prepare for life without the future Hall of Famer by developing talented players on the cheap and having them ready once he steps away from the game.
Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo discusses George Karlaftis’ impact | Chiefs Wire
“Yeah, I mean, probably the first thing that sticks out with George (Karlaftis) is his character. The one thing that (General Manager) Brett (Veach) and (Head Coach) Andy (Reid) do a great job of is we bring in a lot of great character guys.” said Spagnuolo, “That’s huge in my opinion, in today’s pro sports because usually when you’re a high character guy you’re unselfish. George has got all of that, and then his ability and his intelligence. I mean, I can remember when (Defensive Line Coach) Joe (Cullen) and I did the Zoom call with George. Because I think he was (in) the COVID-19 draft – you guys remember better than me, but I just remember that that came out in a Zoom interview. All of that, how much he loved football, high character guy(and) how important it was to him. Brett does a great job keeping those guys here.”

Raiders releasing Christian Wilkins; NFLPA files grievance | ESPN
Wilkins will be released with the designation of terminated vested veteran, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Wilkins has been recovering from a Jones fracture, which he suffered in his left foot last October. Because of how Wilkins has treated the rehab from his injury, the Raiders voided the remaining $35.2 million of guaranteed money left on his contract on June 4, sources said.
The belief was that Wilkins needed another surgery on his foot; he balked at getting it, sources told ESPN. The Raiders then voided the guaranteed money left on his deal due to “failure to maintain his physical condition to play.”
Packers’ new uniforms: ‘1923 classic’ helmets resemble leather ones | USA Today
Dubbed the “1923 Classic,” the uniform is meant to celebrate the club’s first season as a publicly owned corporation, a stock sale rescuing the club from debt. The throwback helmets are meant to resemble the leather ones the team wore more than a century ago, painted in a manner that also makes them look distressed and shows the stitching of the day.
Washington attempted a similar helmet during the 2012 season, but it didn’t have nearly the level of detailing that Green Bay’s new one does.

Jets QB Justin Fields suffers right toe injury in camp | ESPN
Fields pulled up after rolling right and throwing an incomplete short pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert. Fields went down, sat on the ground briefly and limped off the field with the assistance of a trainer.
He spent a few minutes in the injury tent before a cart arrived on the scene. Fields was taken to the locker room, sitting in the passenger seat of the cart, before walking into the team facility under his own power.
Jets coach Aaron Glenn said after practice that he did not yet know the severity of Fields’ injury. Glenn said that he suspected Fields was hurt when his foot was stepped on by a teammate during the Jets’ second practice of training camp but that he needed to see the film.
In case you missed it on Arrowhead Pride
A new look coming for Arrowhead Pride in August
In just a couple of weeks, Arrowhead Pride is switching to a new platform as part of SB Nation’s network-wide move to a new publishing platform. This upgrade will change the look of the site, while also making it faster (and more reliable) on any device you use.
When you land on the site, it will look cleaner. It will be less clunky, with more white space, a better ad experience with faster load times — but will still have all the usual articles, analysis, and news by all the folks you know.
Community discussion (and content created by fans) will be more prominent in the new design. The best comment threads will be easy to find. Staffers and commenters alike will be able to start conversations with a brand-new tool.
We’re planning on an early August reveal, so we wanted to give you a heads up. You’ll hear more from us when it’s almost here. The site will look a little different, feel a little faster — and most importantly — have a bigger role for you.
