The Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga seem stuck in holding pattern. The two sides remain far apart in contract negotiations while other teams offering more money lack the cap space and have been unwilling to meet the Warriors trade demands. Without a contract, Kuminga has decided not to play in this summer’s AfroBasket tournament with the Democratic Republic of Congo’s team, according to a report by Marc Stein. Kuminga is on Congo’s roster for the tournament that is scheduled to begin August
12th.
“Jonathan Kuminga was on the Democratic Republic of Congo’s preliminary roster for AfroBasket in Angola, which starts Aug. 12, but I’m told Kuminga is not expected to play for his national team due to his ongoing restricted free agency stalemate with Golden State,” Stein wrote in a tweet on Wednesday.
Kuminga was easily the most proven player scheduled to be on the team’s roster, but now without the young NBA wing, Congo’s chances of winning the tournament lessen. Granted, there are still a couple of weeks remaining for Kuminga to potentially sign a new contract and opt back into participating.
