Barcelona’s failure to land Nico Williams this summer has dominated headlines in recent weeks and continues to do so.
The latest update on the saga comes from Diario Sport and a claim that it was Barcelona’s demand that Williams change agent that also helped scupper the proposed transfer.
Félix Tainta got thing moving by meeting Deco for talks, on Nico’s request, but the transfer ended up collapsing over registration guarantees.
Sport also say that Barcelona became frustrated with Tainta, especially
as they even had a medical booked for Williams, and wanted the Athletic star to switch to a different agent.
The club even sent a message via WhatsApp that read something like: “Leave Tainta and have Jorge Mendes or Pini Zahavi represent you” which did not go down at all well.
Laporta is known to have a good relationship with both agents - but Williams and his family had worked with Tainta for a long time and were left “outraged” by the suggestion.
Indeed the report adds that Barcelona’s message actually “unleashed a storm” and ultimately caused a total breakdown in relations.
Instead of signing for Barca, Williams spent an afternoon signing a long-term extension and recording the announcement video. The next day it was announced, leaving Barca shocked.
