The War Room: Welcome to the Thunderdome (draft season)
“3 prospects I’m higher on right now:
Ahmad Moten Sr., DT, Miami: We’re talking about a nose tackle with some VIOLENT hands. Maybe it’s that I’ve become increasingly obsessed with nose tackles, but I’m a fan of the run game disruption he offers. There are multiple occasions in which he discards interior linemen in the truest sense of the word. There are other reps in which ignores a double team and fights through it for a stop at the line of scrimmage. I was expecting him to offer zero in the pass game, but he gets off the line a bit quicker than you’d expect at his size and can bull rush you into the pocket if you don’t settle.
Carnell Tate WR, Ohio State: He’s going to produce. I don’t care what Ohio State receiver comparison you give him, but don’t fall victim to the “he’s a No. 2!” His No. 1 has been the best player in college football since he was a freshman. Jaxon Smith-Njigba was a No. 2. Tate is sudden without tipping his hand. That one good point Tom Brady made about Smith-Njigba keeping his shoulders level? Tate runs routes similarly. In an era in which receivers are engaging in a whole lot of Tik Tok-ey, nonsense-riddled route running with wasted steps, Tate is serious, decisive, and rapid.
Noah Thomas, WR, Georgia: Maybe this is copying what I did a couple years ago with Washington, when I loved their third-string wide receiver Jalen McMillan. I haven’t seen nearly enough of Thomas to make a serious proclamation, but what I have seen gives me confidence he can take the top off a defense. He can run.”
49ers QB Mac Jones speculation: Baldinger names logical landing spot
“There’s a team out there, I believe, that would have high interest in Mac Jones,” Baldinger said Wednesday on Bay Area radio station 95.7 The Game. “I believe the Atlanta Falcons, now run by Matt Ryan—I think Matt Ryan looks at Mac Jones and goes, ‘He can do, and has done, a lot of the things that I did to become a league MVP.'”
“If a second-round pick for Mac Jones is out there, you might say, ‘Okay, we’ll take the second-round pick, and we’ll go sign Kirk Cousins to be our backup. We’ll go sign Geno Smith to be our backup,'” Baldinger said. “I think they can still find a backup quarterback that can support what Brock does, and if he goes down, we can have Kirk Cousins, a guy that Kyle’s coached before and knows.”
He added, “But a second-round pick, I might be interested in. You find a starter with a second-round pick that could be a defensive lineman, an offensive guard, a wide receiver. [Seahawks DB] Nick Emmanwori was a second-round pick. You can go find a stud starter in the second round.”
“Otherwise, if I can’t (get what I want), I would think about extending him right now and just saying, ‘Okay, our quarterback room is stable. We’re in good shape here going forward.'”
