Randy Vasquez made his 20th start of the season for the San Diego Padres when they started a three-game series against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park, Monday. Vasquez has not factored in the decision in his last 10 starts, which included another 4 1/3 innings in a 2-1 Padres win.

Vasquez has not earned a win or a loss since his start against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 21. Over his last seven starts, Vasquez has allowed 35 hits in 35 2/3 innings. He’s allowed 15 runs and 13 walkouts, while striking

out 13.

San Diego scored two runs in the top of the second inning in support of Vasquez. Jackson Merrill drove in Xander Bogaerts with an RBI-single to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. They added to their total when Martin Maldonado doubled down the left-field line, which allowed Merrill to score to make the lead 2-0 after the top of the second.

Vasquez worked through three innings before Kyle Stowers hit a leadoff home run to left-center field to make the score 2-1. Vasquez remained in the game after the home run and got out of the bottom of the fourth without any further damage.

Vasquez was replaced by Adrian Morejon in the bottom of the fifth inning after recording a fly ball out and allowing a single to Xavier Edwards. On the first pitch from Morejon, Edwards stole second and was in scoring position with one out. Morejon showed why he was a 2025 All-Star recording a strikeout and a groundout without allowing Edwards to advance any further than second base.

Morejon worked a scoreless sixth inning. Jeremiah Estrada worked a scoreless seventh and Jason Adam was handed the eighth inning. He allowed a leadoff single and immediately induced a ground ball double play for the first two outs of the frame.

Adam then got a ground ball to third and Manny Machado made a difficult throw to Luis Arraez at first base. Arraez jumped and caught the ball and was able to get down and tag Otto Lopez for the final out of the inning.

Robert Suarez came in for the bottom of the ninth and struck out Agustin Ramirez, got Stowers to pop out to Arraez and allowed a two-out single to Liam Hicks. Suarez ended the game with the next pitch when he got a ground ball to shortstop that resulted in a force out at second base to preserve the win.

The Padres play the Marlins, Tuesday at 3:40 p.m.
