Roster moves

The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.

  • Reinstated from the 15-day injured list: LHP Jalen Beeks
  • Selected to the Major League roster: LHP Kyle Nelson (No. 24) + INF Connor Kaiser (No. 65)
  • Reported to the Major League roster: INF Tyler Locklear (No. 28)
  • Optioned to Triple-A Reno: LHP Brandyn Garcia + INF Tristin English

Yeah, I just spent a fascinating hour updating our 40-man roster article, catching up on all the changes over the past few weeks. If my math is right, that’s seen six players removed (Merrill Kelly, Eugenio Suárez, Josh Naylor, Randal Grichuk, Shelby Miller and, off the 60-day IL, Jordan Montgomery), six added (Brandyn Garcia, Juan Burgos, Andrew Hoffmann, Tyler Locklear, Connor Kaiser and the return of the previously

DFA’d Kyle Nelson). There have also been two (Sergio Alcantara and Trevor Richards) who managed to both be added AND taken off the 40-man roster since I last opened the spreadsheet. Well done. You must get up very early...

With regard to the active roster, we needed to replace yesterday’s trade chips on that roster, in Merrill Kelly and Eugenio Suarez, plus make room for the arrival of Locklear, and the return of Beeks. So earlier trade return Garcia’s stay here is a short one. and English is now surplus to requirements with Locklear probably getting a long look at first-base for the rest of the season. Anthony DeSclafani will move into the rotation tonight, replacing Kelly, with Kyle Nelson making his 2025 debut, after being DFA’d off the 40-man roster about a month ago, and going unclaimed. It has been a struggle for him in Reno, with a 6.35 ERA across 22.2 innings. Seven HR in that time isn’t good, thoughPCL gonna PCL.

Locklear goes right into the starting line-up tonight at first-base, and that’s certainly going to be one of the stories to follow over the remaining two months. I note he is wearing #28, which was recently the number of some Eugenio guy. Not sure who that is. :) We also see that Blaze Alexander gets the first crack at stepping into Suarez’s shoes at the hot corner. The presence of Kaiser is an odd one though. Was chatting to James this afternoon, and I’m not sure what his purpose is intended to be. His OPS in Reno is just .769, which is 32 points below the average in the PCL, and at age 28, it doesn’t feel like there’s much upside coming. Might just be a place-holder until Jordan Lawler is healthy?
