The New England Patriots were back to work on Saturday for their fourth training camp practice of the week. Following a walkthrough session yesterday, the energy and intensity ramped up throughout the day in what felt like a true training camp practice.

Here is what went down on the fields behind Gillette Stadium.

Setting

Attire: Shorts and shells

Duration: ca. 90 minutes (10:15-11:45 a.m. ET)

Conditions: Sunny, temperatures in the 80s

Foxborough day. While there were still no pads per the league mandated rules, the intensity was risen throughout the 90 minutes of practice.

Attendance

Absent: WR Ja’Lynn Polk, WR Mack Hollins (PUP), OT Vederian Lowe (PUP), TE Austin Hooper (PUP), Josh Minkins (NFI)

Limited: CB Carlton Davis

Injured: LB Jahlani Tavai

While the Patriots began practice without Rhamondre Stevenson, Morgan Moses, and Carlton Davis, the running back and offensive tackle eventually took the field to take part in team drills without any visible limitation. Davis, on the other hand, appeared briefly in uniform and just spent time on the exercise bike — likely part of the maintenance for the cornerback after originally having starting the summer on the non-football injury list.

New England did see linebacker Jahlani Tavai, who suffered a calf injury this spring, leave practice early during positional drills. Tavai spent plenty of time with head athletic trainer Jim Whalen before departing.

Takeaways

Airing it out: Running their first 7-on-7 period of the summer and plenty of full team work, Drake Maye had the opportunity to throw the ball downfield more than he had over the first three days of camp. Maye’s accuracy was a bit more inconsistent than it had been in past days — specifically missing on a pair of crossers — but the second-year quarterback connected on big plays downfield to Javon Baker (7s) and DeMario Douglas (11s).

The latter was the play of camp to date, with Maye rolling to his right before hitting Douglas in stride down the right sideline for a touchdown from roughly 50 yards out.

Beyond the highlights, Maye also had some pretty intermediate throws over and in-between defenders to Hunter Henry (crosser) and Kayshon Boutte (dig) — which was layered perfectly over linebacker Robert Spillane.

Pop’s big day: Speaking of DeMario Douglas, the 24-year-old continues to be the team’s best performing receiver throughout the offseason. In addition to his highlight connection with Maye — where Douglas also nicely adjusted his route downfield during the scramble drill — the third-year wideout also caught a downfield crosser and then went through Marcus Jones to haul in an out along the right sideline.

Earlier, Douglas also connected with backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs downfield in 7-on-7 work. He looks headed for a career-year under new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels while his chemistry with Maye continues to grow.

Diggs’ quiet day: While the targets were there for Stefon Diggs, the production was on the quieter side compared to earlier practices. Diggs saw Maye’s first three targets in 7-on-7s (one completion) and later caught just two balls, including one check down, in team periods.

Defense punches back: While New England’s top offense found some chunk plays in the passing game, the Patriots defensive line spent plenty of time in the backfield on Saturday. The attack was led by Milton Williams and Keion White, who proved constant problems for New England’s offensive line with a handful of would-be sacks.

Behind them, Robert Spillane was active with back-to-back pass breakups while Jabrill Peppers also hauled in an interception off of Dobbs. Linebacker Jack Gibbens tipped the ball in the air, and the veteran safety hauled it in for the unit’s second pick of this year’s camp.

Henderson’s impact: During the early periods of practice, rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson consistently had a step on the opposing coverage — often on a wheel route out of the backfield — but neither of New England’s top QBs could find him the football. That changed to end Dobbs’ day, as Henderson aligned out wide and was open down the left sideline for an explosive gain.

New England’s rookie back, who also hauled in a pair of check downs from Dobbs, continues to make an impact as a pass catcher. His speed stands out each and every practice.

Kicker competition: For the second time this summer, New England’s kickers got work in their competition. Rookie Andres Borregales appeared to go 3-of-4 missing an extra point that he called a mishit. His second kick from 37ish yards may be under review, however, after the wind pushed it directly over the right upright. Borregales rebounded to cleanly hit from 47 and 50 yards.

As for Parker Romo, he appeared to continue his perfect summer as well but also had a close call over the same upright. The final tally will have to wait until further review.

Other notes: Javon Baker and Efton Chism got their first snaps of the summer with Drake Maye. … Playing with third-string QB Ben Wooldridge, Chism continues to be a hard cover over the middle of the field, getting open twice on crossers and hauling in his one catchable target. … New England’s top offensive line remained the same: Will Campbell, Cole Strange, Garrett Bradbury, Mike Onwenu and Morgan Moses were the starters, with Jared Wilson working in at left guard and center and Demontrey Jacobs the top reserve tackle. … Jack Gibbens had a pair of PBUs while Harold Landry, Christian Gonzalez and D.J. James also tallied one breakup each.

Preview

The Patriots will have their first day off of the summer on Sunday before returning to work on Monday — which is expected to be the first fully padded practice of training camp. Gates will open at 9:15 a.m. ET with the session set to start at 10:15 a.m. ET.

A select group of players will be made available to talk to the media afterwards with Mike Vrabel slated to speak beforehand.
