Tommy Edman’s rough, injury-plagued season took another bad turn on Sunday, as the Dodgers utility man aggravated the right ankle he’s been dealing with for weeks while running the bases, causing him to leave Sunday’s game early against the Rays.
Edman singled to center field off Joe Boyle in the fifth inning on Sunday, but as he rounded first base immediately pulled up, feeling something in his right ankle. After a visit with trainer Thomas Albert, Edman limped off the field.
Edman started at second
base on Sunday and has also played a lot of third base with Max Muncy out. Edman has played the infield in 42 of his last 44 games, as it’s been easier on his ankle than roaming center field.
He missed 16 games on the injured list in May with right ankle inflammation, which has bothered him off and on since. Edman only started four of six games this week. He also missed three games in the first week of July after suffering a fracture in his toe.
On the season, Edman is hitting .228/.281/.396 with an 87 wRC+, and since his injured-list stint in May is hitting just .214/.273/.323.
Miguel Rojas pinch-ran for Edman in the fifth inning on Sunday and remained in the game at second base.
