Official: Paul Wanner gets the shirt number 24 at Bayern Munich

COVID-19 made life difficult for many people and many organizations, including football teams. Bayern Munich was not immune from its’ damaging reach, with one such example of its’ devastation being the

way a rash of COVID infections saw nearly a dozen Bayern players sidelined in early 2022 for a game against Borussia Mönchengladbach. But problems breed creative solutions, with then-manager Julian Nagelsmann seeing fit to give a young 16-year-old his debut. When the #14 took the field, Bayern fans were astounded by the youngster’s close control and brave play, especially considering his tender years. That was the fans’ first impression of Paul Wanner.

Fast forward to today, however, and new star signing and former Liverpool FC player Luis Díaz has taken the #14. Given Wanner’s years away from the squad, one supposes he did not have a claim for it anymore. Still, what would his new number be? Well, @iMiaSanMia captures what it is:

Paul Wanner has been given shirt number 24.

24 is really just the downgraded version of 14. One supposes that makes sense. Until Wanner has gained in prominence in the squad, he will need to make do with the downgrade. But in the meantime, Bayern fans will have to make do with the slightly bizarre sight of a #24 running around in attacking positions where the legendary #25 made his home for so long.
