Game Preview:

West Virginia opens its 30th season tonight with a marquee matchup against No. 15 Virginia under the lights at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the Mountaineers will look to make an immediate statement against one of the nation’s perennial powers.

This is the 21st meeting between the two programs, with the Cavaliers holding a 13-4-3 advantage in the all-time series. They last met in 2023, a narrow 2-1 UVA victory in Charlottesville, while WVU’s most recent win came at home in 2021 when it knocked off then-No. 10 Virginia by a 1-0 score.

The Mountaineers enter the season led by a strong senior core, with co-captains Ajanae Respass, Taylor White, Nyema Ingleton, and Abbey Olexa all returning. Respass and White were the team’s top scorers a year ago, each netting seven goals, and they’ll be joined by experienced returners and a talented group of 12 newcomers, including Pacific transfer Alexis Pashales and former UCLA midfielder Maya Leoni.

WVU went 8-1-1 at home last season and has beaten a top-25 opponent in 16 of the past 19 years. The Mountaineers are also 80-3 in their last 83 matches when scoring at least twice — a formula that could be key against a ranked opponent in the opener.

Scouting Virginia:

Virginia enters its 26th season under head coach Steve Swanson, who has guided the Cavaliers to 26 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The program is coming off a 2024 campaign that featured a balanced attack and a sturdy defense, averaging 1.79 goals per game while allowing just 0.936.

Senior forward Maggie Cagle is the focal point of the offense after leading UVA in goals, points, and sharing the team lead in assists last year. She was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team and will test a WVU defense that posted eight clean sheets in 2024.

The Cavaliers hold a 5-3-1 edge over WVU in matches played in Morgantown, but Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium has been a tough venue for visiting ranked teams — the Mountaineers have 10 home wins over top-10 opponents since 2010.
