If you watched Jaylin Lane play for the Virginia Tech Hokies over the past two years, you saw a player who would likely be a better NFL player than a college player. That’s through no fault of his own, though.
The Hokies haven’t had a competent offense in years, dating back to Justin Fuente’s time in Blacksburg. Probably even before that. Talent has not always been to blame. Coaching and quarterback play have hindered Tech’s offense. The Hokies hope new offensive coordinator Phillip Montgomery and returning
quarterback Kyron Drones reverse that in 2025.
Back to Lane. A fourth-round pick of the Washington Commanders in April’s 2025 NFL Draft, Lane is off to a fast start in his first NFL training camp. During Sunday’s practice in Ashburn, Virginia, NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels threw a rope to Lane in the very back corner of the end zone. The 5-foot-10 Lane went high and beat two of Washington’s best defensive backs, Mike Sainristil and Quan Martin, for the would-be touchdown.
Here’s the play.

What a fantastic throw and catch.
Lane is expected to be the Commanders’ primary return man in 2025. He will play at receiver, but is behind Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel and Luke McCaffrey. But with more catches like that, the explosive Lane will force his way into the offensive game plan as a rookie.
Makes you wonder what could have been in Blacksburg.
