Having just made their first move of the MLB Trade Deadline, reports from Mike Puma and Pat Ragazzo say that multiple teams are checking in with the Mets on the availability of Starling Marte. Ragazzo says that ‘rival teams view him as a lower prospect cost [right-handed] bat off the bench].’
Marte, in his fourth year as a Met, is currently hitting .275/.356/.395 with four home runs, 20 RBI, and and eight doubles. Since his stellar 2022 season where he put up 3.8 bWAR, Marte has struggled to stay
healthy and also to replicate that success.
The Mets may be in the market for some help on the designated hitter/bench front themselves, so the Mets may hold off on moving Marte until they’re sure that they can replace his production elsewhere. With the Yankees trading for third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Rockies, the first offensive moves of the deadline are starting to fall into place. That acquisition also takes the Yankees out of the Eugenio Suáraz sweepstakes, which the Mets are reported to be monitoring.
