The Mets have reportedly checked in on Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, according to Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated.
A former top prospect, Cabrera showed glimpses of his potential at the major league level while battling injuries over the past few years before breaking out in 2025. A right-handed 27-year-old, Cabrera has a 3.35 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 94.0 innings this year, and he’s eligible for his first year of arbitration next season. He brandishes a sinker that averages 96.6 miles
per hour, as well as an elite curveball-slider combo that has landed him a 98th-percentile breaking run value this season.
The Mets have previously been linked to right-handed rentals such as Dylan Cease, Merrill Kelly, and Zac Gallen, as well as other right-handers with multiple years of team control such as Mitch Keller, Joe Ryan, and Cabrera’s teammate Sandy Alcantara. While David Stearns’ stated priority at the deadline is bolstering the Mets’ bullpen, reinforcing the team’s rotation would help ease the strain on their middle relievers. Acquiring a starter could also allow the Mets to send Clay Holmes to the bullpen as he continues on pace to double his previous career high in innings pitched.
