WHAT'S THE STORY?

Welcome to the Morning Commute

Today we’re talking about Ben Askren.

Former Mizzou wrestler Ben Askren posted a video that announced he was released from the hospital on Tuesday nearly two months after he entered due to a severe case of pneumonia. Askren underwent a double lung transplant about a month ago.

Askren, 41, is listed as ‘One of the most dominant athletes to ever compete in an individual sport in Mizzou history’ by Mizzou Athletics, and has spent a lot of time in Columbia

“We’re still waiting an official word on incoming Mississippi State RHP transfer Jason Pruitt (drafted 15th round by the Philadelphia Phillies) and of course RHP Sam Horn (17th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers) as the deadline for draftees to officially sign with their MLB organizations is Monday, July 28th (4:00 p.m. CST).”

After losing a key pitcher prospect and one of the team’s leading hitters, these are some important announcements that Mizzou fans should be sure to keep an eye on.

“Have a bad season as a blue blood, watch all the pretty recruiting stars just fly as far away from your nest as possible. That includes four quarterbacks, four backup running backs, five receivers, two tight ends, and five o-lineman. From a unit that ranked 75th in the nation. And a lot of those transfers had to transfer down to mid-tier programs or G5 teams. Yikes.”

This is becoming more and more normal with the new landscape, expect to see this a lot more in major college sports.

“When Drinkwitz arrived in Columbia in late 2019, rivalries were still a thing of the past for the Tigers. After nearly a decade in the SEC, the only game with any hostility on Mizzou’s schedule each year was Arkansas, and even that felt a little forced.
Now? Eli Drinkwitz’s loud talking and Mizzou’s success has raised the hostility levels tenfold with a number of teams. South Carolina and Mizzou are battling for entry into the SEC’s top tier. Mizzou and Tennessee have earned some bad blood.”

New rivalries have emerged across the SEC and Columbia gets to see a lot them this season; Mizzou fans should be excited.

“There were so many great moments this season in Mizzou Athletics. Snapshots in time that, no matter how the season ultimately ended up, left you feeling a sense of utter euphoria at that moment. It could have been an astonishing win that no one saw coming, a court storming after beating a most hated rival, a ranked road dub, a key defensive stop, a champion crowned, a program-defining finish.”

So many euphoric memories this season for Missouri fans to choose from! MU hoops taking down kU and Mizzou gymnastics making it to the final four are in a tight knit race with two days left to get votes in.
