The Rock: The Final Boss is ‘the greatest heel pro wrestling has seen’

WHAT'S THE STORY?

Binging all five episodes of the first season of WWE Unreal — the new Netflix series out today (July 29) that purports to document what goes on behind-the-scenes at the world’s biggest pro wrestling company — it’s clear that the show becomes more interesting as it goes along.

Is that just because it gets into more intriguing territory as it covers the final stretch of the Road to WrestleMania 41 and the event itself? Or did it jusrt take a couple episodes for WWE and its partners at Netflix and Peyton

Manning’s Omaha Productions to land on the right formula for Unreal?

We’ll hope its the latter as we await the currently-filming second season. For now, we’ll start to dig into Unreal’s fourth episode. Entitled “Heel Turn”, it opens with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson describing the Final Boss character he’s been playing on-and-off in WWE since the build to last year’s ‘Mania.

“The Final Boss, the greatest heel professional wrestling has seen. Insurmountable antagonist. There’s nothing The Final Boss can’t do. There’s nothing that The Final Boss can’t say.

“Becoming this new version has been the most gratifying decision that I’ve ever made.”

Whether you think Johnson is a raging egomaniac or a brilliant showman, it’s a pretty unsurprising quote. Either way, it makes sense that’s something Rock would believe about his character. The question is whether the final line will spark as many memes as his one scene in WrestleMania XL: Behind The Curtain did last year.

All episodes of WWE Unreal are available to stream on Netflix here.
