The first two games of this series have been uglier than a pair of used bowling shoes. In the opener, everything that could go wrong did go wrong as the bullpen wasted a 12-run offensive outburst. In the middle game, the Yanks had as many hits as boneheaded blunders (two) and got shut out, 2-0. Now, they try to avoid being swept by a Marlins team that entered 2025 with extremely low expectations.
Today’s starter is today’s big story. Luis Gil, the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year, makes his
2025 debut. A lat strain suffered in spring training has derailed Gil’s season to this point, but he returns for the stretch run. Gil featured a fastball, slider, changeup mix last season. The slider and change were particular effective as opponents managed a .171 and .179 batting average against them, respectively. Note that in a corresponding move for Gil’s activation, reliever Jonathan Loáisiga was placed on the 15-day IL with back tightness.
Miami counters with right-hander Edward Cabrera. A popular name on the trade market, the 27-year-old has pitched well for the Marlins, to the tune of a 3.35 ERA in 94 innings, striking out just over a batter per inning (96 K). He’s been even better at home, with a 3.00 ERA and 1.088 WHIP in 10 starts so far. Cabrera is a kitchen sink guy in terms of keeping batters on their toes. He throws five pitches, with his four-seam fastball the least frequent (14% of the time) and his change (24%) the most. One thing to watch? He will give up hard contact. His average exit velocity (38th percentile) and Hard Hit% (21st) are both well below-average.
Even though Aaron Judge is out a couple more days, there is no shortage of hot bats in the Yankee lineup. Cody Bellinger is hitting .320 over his last 30 games with a 1.006 OPS. As someone who was extremely skeptical of bringing Belli to the Bronx, I’ll fully admit I was wrong and hope to see him in pinstripes for the next few years at least. Meanwhile, Giancarlo Stanton has six home runs in his last 15 games and is doing his best to ensure Aaron Boone keeps his bat in the lineup upon Judge’s return.
Come on, Yankees. Don’t get swept. There were some really good vibes coming out of the Tampa series. Those are now at risk of being distant memories.
