In the fall of 2002, Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff introduced the WWE Universe to a brutal new match called the Elimination Chamber. The concept? Two participants start the match with four others being
released into the match at regular intervals. The winner? The last person (or team) standing once all others have been eliminated by pinfall or submission.
The first Chamber match was contested at Survivor Series 2002 and saw Shawn Michaels outlast a star studded field to win the World Heavyweight Championship. For the next few years, the Chamber would be used periodically, until finding a home at WWE’s February premium live event, No Way Out in 2008. Two years later, the WWE would rename its February PLE to Elimination Chamber, an event that has occurred annually every year since, except for 2015 when it was moved to May, and 2016 when Fastlane and Roadblock comprised the Road to Wrestlemania.
As we head towards the 16th installment of the Elimination Chamber PLE in less than 3 weeks, what better way to get pumped up for the last stop on the Road to Wrestlemania than with an in depth look at Elimination Chamber by the numbers?
King of Kings = King of the Chamber
Leading the way in Elimination Chamber victories is the King of Kings, Triple H. The current WWE Chief Content Officer is tied with John Cena for first all time with 4 Chamber victories. Despite losing the World Title in the first ever Chamber match in 2002, Hunter would go on to win 4 of the next 7. Three of these wins (in ‘03, ‘06, ‘09) would mark the beginning of one of the 14 World Title reigns Triple H would amass over his storied career. The fourth win (in ‘08) would earn The Game a WWE Title shot at WrestleMania 24, a Triple Threat match that saw Randy Orton retain his title against Triple H and Cena.
Triple H came very close to winning a record 5th Chamber match in his final attempt in 2010, when he made it to the final 2, before tapping to who else, but…. John Cena.
Overall, only 6 wrestlers have multiple Elimination Chamber victories.
Most Chamber Victories
- Triple H & John Cena (4 wins)
- Daniel Bryan & Edge (3)
- Drew McIntyre & Bianca Belair (2)
Legend Killer = Chamber Filler
On Smackdown this past Friday, Randy Orton defeated Solo Sikoa and Aleister Black, becoming the first person to stamp their ticket to the men’s Chamber match in Chicago. By qualifying, the Viper will extend his own record by making his 10th appearance in the Elimination Chamber. Despite spending more time in the diabolic steel structure than anyone else in history, Randy Orton has only won one Chamber match, retaining his World Title at Elimination Chamber 2014.
On the women’s side, there have only been 7 Chamber matches since the first women’s one was booked in 2018. Shockingly, Liv Morgan has competed in 6 of those matches, only missing the very first one. Despite also tying with Shayna Baszler for the most total eliminations with 5, Liv has never won the Chamber match. Getting that monkey off of her back will have to wait until next year, as Liv already stamped her ticket to WrestleMania by winning the 2026 Royal Rumble.
Most Chamber Appearances
- Randy Orton (9, soon to be 10 appearances)
- Chris Jericho & John Cena (8)
- Kofi Kingston, Triple H & Liv Morgan (6)
The Man of 1,004 Holds = The Man with Most Eliminations
As rumors swirl over when and where Chris Jericho will show up on our TV screens again, the Ayatollah of Rock ‘n’ Rollah clings to the top of the leaderboard with 10 Chamber eliminations. Jericho has competed in the match 8 different times, finally winning his first and only Chamber on his 6th attempt in 2010, when Shawn Michaels snuck into the Chamber and hit The Undertaker with Sweet Chin Music to allow Y2J to become World Champion.
In addition to The Deadman, Jericho’s 10 eliminations reads like a “Who’s who?” of Hall of Famers and legends, such as Booker T., Kane, Kevin Nash, Edge, Umaga, JBL, Kofi Kingston, Dolph Ziggler, and….. (checks notes)….. Mike Knox?!? Yep, the guy whose main claim to fame was interrupting Kelly Kelly’s striptease on ECW was once a contender for the World Heavyweight Championship. 2009 WWE was wild!
Most Eliminations
- Chris Jericho (10 eliminations)
- Randy Orton (8)
- CM Punk & Triple H (7)
Championship Advantage…. in the Chamber?
As of this writing, there have been 36 Chamber matches in WWE history, 23 of which have been contested with a championship on the line. Triple H and Ryback would win vacant titles in the Chamber, and Bayley and Sasha became inaugural WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. Of the 20 other Chambers with a title up for grabs, the defending champion has retained their title(s) on 12 different occasions, a whopping 60% of the time!
Daniel Bryan is the only wrestler in history to have multiple title defenses in the Chamber, retaining the World Title in 2012 and the WWE Title at the beginning of Kofimania in 2019.
John Cena has the dubious distinction of being the only wrestler in history to lose their title in multiple Chamber matches, losing his World Title to Edge in 2009 and the WWE Title to Bray Wyatt in 2017. Cena is also one of only two wrestlers (Drew McIntyre in 2021 is the other) to lose their title to a Money in the Bank cash-in immediately following a successful title defense in the Chamber.
Beginner’s Luck…. and Cashing Out Early

- The #1 Contenders Match for the Universal Title at Elimination Chamber 2018 was the only Chamber match in history to feature 7 competitors. Raw GM Kurt Angle added a seventh competitor when Finn Balor and Seth Rollins simultaneously pinned Bray Wyatt in a qualifying match. Elias became the only wrestler in history to enter the Chamber seventh, which didn’t end up paying off, as he was the 2nd person eliminated in the match. This was the longest Chamber match in history, and also the match where Braun Strowman set the record for most eliminations in a single Chamber, with 5. That was until….
- Shayna Baszler became the only person to run the table in a Chamber match, pinning all 5 women in the 2020 Chamber, en route to losing her title match to Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 36.
Randy Orton and Tiffany Stratton have already qualified for the Chamber matches this year. Qualifying matches continue on Raw and Smackdown this week.
