What's Happening?
Dr. Gary E. Jones, a respected educator and community leader, has passed away at the age of 86. Jones, originally from Youngstown, Ohio, dedicated his life to education and service, impacting thousands of students and community members throughout his career. He served as principal of Gavit Junior/Senior High School and Assistant Superintendent for the School City of Hammond, Indiana, where he implemented programs for gifted students and expanded professional development. Jones was also a founding director at Calumet College of St. Joseph, leading initiatives like Camp U Can! to help truant students. His service extended beyond education, as he was involved in the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and numerous civic boards, earning several awards for his contributions. A visitation will be held on August 2 in Munster, Indiana, with donations encouraged to the Michael J. Fox Foundation or through blood donations in his honor.
