FAO Director-General QU Dongyu visited Sierra Leone to explore ways to deepen FAO's support for the country's agricultural sector. During his visit, he toured the Central Veterinary Laboratory, which plays a crucial role in managing antimicrobial resistance and livestock health. The laboratory has been upgraded to Biosafety Level 2, and FAO is considering expanding it to include a food safety laboratory. Additionally, QU visited Pee Cee Agriculture, Sierra Leone's first large-scale, climate-smart mechanized onion farm, which has created over 500 jobs. The farm, supported by a $12 million loan from the International Finance Corp., aims to reduce imports and ensure year-round production. FAO is advising on using the farm as a platform for technical training of local smallholders.
