Tropical Storm Bertha Causes Catastrophic Flooding in Texas, Claims Third Victim
Tropical Storm Bertha has caused catastrophic flooding across Texas, claiming a third life, as confirmed by Governor Greg Abbott on Friday, July 24, 2026. The storm has prompted over 500 rescues, damaged homes and businesses, and left some areas inaccessible. The Nueces River reached a major flood stage of 29 feet (8.8 meters) but has since crested and is expected to decline. However, downstream areas, including the Lake Corpus Christi reservoir, are anticipated to see rising waters into early August. Governor Abbott conducted a flyover of Cotulla, located 90 miles southwest of San Antonio, to assess the damage. A disaster declaration has been issued for 59 counties, with federal disaster assistance requested for 33 counties. Heavy rainfall from the storm has severely impacted Central Texas over the past week.
