Lakes Powell and Mead Hit Record-Low Water Levels Amid Colorado River Crisis
Lake Powell and Lake Mead, the two largest reservoirs in the United States, have reached their lowest combined water storage levels on record, according to Newsweek. As of July 12, 2026, the combined live storage dropped to 12,675,509 acre-feet, breaking the previous record set in March 2023. The reservoirs, which are critical components of the Colorado River system, are experiencing accelerated depletion due to ongoing drought and increased water usage. Experts warn that the situation marks a critical point in the water supply crisis affecting the western United States.
