McClatchy Newspaper Chain Implements Deep Cuts Across U.S. Publications
The McClatchy newspaper chain has enacted significant layoffs across its U.S. publications, including The Miami Herald, The Sacramento Bee, The Kansas City Star, and The Charlotte Observer. On September 11, the union representing McClatchy journalists reported that over 90 unionized journalists and news-media workers across 17 publications were laid off, constituting approximately 30% of all McClatchy workers unionized with the NewsGuild-CWA. These cuts have impacted various departments, with The Miami Herald losing its entire writing staff for El Nuevo Herald, its only female photographer, the entire audience team, and its sole video producer. Additionally, all reporters covering Broward County were cut.
