Library of Congress Receives Musical Gift from Wales for USA250 Anniversary
The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., recently hosted a special event to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States, during which a musical gift from Wales was formally presented to the American people. The gift is an orchestral work titled 'Symffoni’r Môr Mawr – A Transatlantic Symphony,' composed by Katie Jenkins, a Pontypridd-born, New York-based artist. This 15-minute composition, recorded with Welsh and American talent including Sir Bryn Terfel and GRAMMY Award-winning pianist Chloe Flower, tells the story of Welsh migration to America and the cultural traditions they brought with them. The work, created in both Welsh and English, explores themes of migration, heritage, home, and community, drawing on Welsh hymnody and choral traditions alongside contemporary orchestral and American musical influences.
