David Hirsch's Legacy: Transforming Sonoma Coast into a Pinot Noir Haven
David Hirsch, a pioneering figure in the California wine industry, has passed away at the age of 81 due to respiratory failure. Hirsch, who was known for his innovative approach to viticulture, transformed a remote area of the Sonoma coast into a renowned source for Pinot Noir. In 1978, he purchased an 860-acre sheep ranch near Fort Ross, California, and began exploring the complex soils of the region, known as the Franciscan Mélange. Over nearly five decades, Hirsch's meticulous study of the terroir and climate interactions led to the establishment of Hirsch Vineyards in 2002. His work attracted other notable winemakers and contributed significantly to the understanding of terroir in California viticulture.
