Texas Court Slashes $50 Million Judgment Against Alex Jones to Approximately $6 Million
A Texas court has reduced a $50 million judgment against Infowars founder Alex Jones to approximately $6 million. This ruling stems from a lawsuit where Jones falsely claimed the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school mass shooting was a hoax. The Texas Third Court of Appeals upheld over $4.1 million in compensatory damages awarded to Sandy Hook parents Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis for defamation and emotional distress. However, the court significantly cut the punitive damages from over $45 million to $1.5 million, citing the state's $750,000 cap per plaintiff. The court determined that Heslin and Lewis did not provide sufficient evidence to exceed this cap, and the trial judge improperly allowed higher damages post-trial. This decision does not impact the $1.25 billion judgment against Jones in Connecticut, and he continues to appeal all financial judgments and the liquidation of his company, Free Speech Systems.
