Colorado Voters to Decide on Redirecting Sales Taxes from Outdoor Gear to Conservation Efforts
Colorado voters will consider Proposition 137 in November, a ballot measure that proposes dedicating state sales taxes collected on outdoor gear to conservation and wildfire prevention programs. If approved, the measure would also exempt this sales tax revenue from the state’s spending cap, as defined by the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights. Supporters estimate that Proposition 137 could generate approximately $175 million annually. These funds would be allocated to initiatives aimed at improving ecosystems, protecting wildlife, mitigating wildfire damage, and expanding outdoor access. The proposition specifically targets sales tax from products such as tents, campers, skis, boats, and fishing equipment. Proponents emphasize that the measure would not increase existing taxes, raise prices for consumers, or alter the retail experience for businesses. The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office confirmed on August 21 that the initiative gathered sufficient valid signatures to qualify for the ballot.
