Wrangell Awaits Full FEMA Reimbursement for 2023 Landslide Recovery
The borough of Wrangell, Alaska, is still awaiting full reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for costs incurred during the response to a deadly landslide in November 2023. The landslide resulted in six fatalities and prompted significant emergency response efforts. The borough has spent over $1 million on recovery, including debris removal and utility repairs. While FEMA has approved approximately $638,000 in federal and state disaster funds, Wrangell is still owed about $346,000. The reimbursement process has been slower than expected, with FEMA dealing with a nationwide backlog of disaster funding requests. The federal government is covering 75% of the disaster response costs, with the state reimbursing the remaining 25%.
