Congressional Budget Office Warns of Complications with Small Employer Health Benefits
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has issued a comprehensive guide to the small-employer health benefit market, preparing Congress for upcoming discussions on alternative health plans. The CBO's analysis highlights potential complications, stating that making more affordable options available to some businesses could increase costs for others. It also warns of the introduction of plans with limited services or inadequate provider networks, potentially leading to high out-of-pocket costs for enrollees. Between 2014 and 2024, the number of people with small business-provided health coverage increased from 16.9 million to 18.6 million. However, only 36% of small business workers were enrolled in a plan offered by their own employer, and about 20% of small business owners remain uninsured.
