Dr. George Colin Stove's Legacy in Radar Technology and Remote Sensing
Dr. George Colin Stove, a pioneering inventor in radar technology and remote sensing, passed away on July 20, 2026. Born in Sandwick, Shetland, in 1949, Stove's early life was marked by a deep connection to his island heritage. He pursued higher education at the University of Aberdeen, where he was mentored by Professor R. V. Jones, a key figure in radar research during World War II. Stove's career was distinguished by his work in remote sensing and radar technology, including the development of atomic dielectric resonance (ADR), a groundbreaking method for deep-penetrating radiowave signals. His contributions extended beyond geology to medical applications, such as cancer detection. Stove's work earned him international recognition and numerous accolades, including an honorary fellowship from the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
