2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season Sets 60-Year Record
The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has set a record for the longest stretch without a hurricane in the satellite era, which began in 1966. As of September 28, no hurricanes have formed, despite the season being four months in and past its peak. This dry spell surpasses previous records set in 2002 and 2013, when the first hurricanes of those seasons formed on September 11. NOAA's National Weather Service had predicted a below-average season, with expectations of two to six hurricanes and seven to 13 named storms. So far, eight named storms have developed, aligning with forecasts. The Pacific Ocean, in contrast, has seen significant hurricane activity in 2026, fueled by a strong El Niño. The Atlantic hurricane season runs until November 30, leaving two months for potential hurricane development.
