Wildfire Smoke Blankets U.S., Air Quality Alerts Issued
Smoke from Canadian wildfires has resulted in hazardous air quality levels across the United States, prompting air quality alerts in dozens of states. As of August 2, Canada is battling 838 active fires, with 165 categorized as 'out of control' (Independent, 2026). The smoke has drifted south, affecting regions in the Pacific Northwest and is forecast to reach Portland, Salem, and the California coast by late Monday into Tuesday. Meanwhile, Washington state is contending with its own wildfires, including three major blazes in the Spokane area that have forced tens of thousands to evacuate. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has discussed federal assistance with President Trump, who has expressed concern for affected residents.
