Europe's Insurance Industry Faces Challenges Due to Increasing Wildfires and Extreme Weather
Europe's insurance industry is grappling with the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires and extreme weather events, which are leaving a significant portion of financial damage uninsured. Major insurance companies, such as Zurich Insurance Group, are highlighting the need for improved risk assessment, mitigation, and coverage to address this growing gap. The region has experienced several heatwaves and wildfires, with temperatures regularly exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit, prompting red alerts and threat-to-life warnings. Insurers warn that the region faces a growing 'protection gap' as disaster recovery costs outpace insurance coverage. Zurich Insurance Group's CEO, Mario Greco, emphasized that while all weather risks are insurable, the costs are becoming increasingly expensive.
