India Releases Kashmiri Activist and Journalist Amid Legal Restrictions
India has released Kashmiri human rights activist Khurram Parvez and journalist Irfan Mehraj on bail after years of imprisonment under charges of 'terror funding.' Parvez was detained for 1,703 days and Mehraj for 1,219 days under India's stringent anti-terror laws. Despite their release, both remain under strict court-imposed restrictions, as the Indian federal counter-terror agency seeks to overturn the bail decision. The Delhi High Court has refused to suspend the release order but has imposed tougher restrictions on their movements, requiring them to stay in New Delhi and barring them from returning to Kashmir. International human rights organizations, including the United Nations, have advocated for their release, citing their arrests as retaliatory actions against their human rights work.
